 Newport RI

Fishing on Saturday with Linda Murray and Tom Murray her dad. We meet at the dock at 6:00am and the air temp greeted us with a chill around 50 Deg . The wind was out of the North East 10-15  as predicted. It was  hat and mittens weather. Fall is surely  upon us. As we headed to the Newport area the tide was at the low and  soon would start to fill  in on the structure. Fishing was tough, as Linda and her dad were new to the light tackle game. Tom was trying out the Fly rod  while Linda worked the spin rod. Linda landed a few small Bluefish while Tom got by the learning curve. The bait fish was small and plentiful. you would think we should have fish plenty. But there were few fish the cold front change  things  as usual. We headed back into the bay as the conditions worsened, and found what we were looking for. The Bluefish were feeding on three inch Silversides and  it was a sight for my eyes. Bluefish are a captains best friend. Soon Linda was fighting a toothy 7-8 lb Fish and she knew it. Tom  hooked up on a  fish of the same  size and soon parted the leader. In his excitement he held on for dear life.  After a few more instructions Tom landed his first Bluefish it was his first Fly rod fish . I loved it, the day was beautiful and the fishing was tough but  my sports were happy. I will be out again soon look for my report Until Then Tight Lines.

Rich Milnor and Mike Hunter form Virginia fished today ,both men have fished with me before. Leaving the dock at 5:30 with the air temp around 50 deg. the feeling of fall was in the air. Soon after we reached our first reef  Rich  landed his first Striper of the day. Several fish  came along the boat in the first hour. Both men landed more than a handful before the sun was above the horizon. We moved along the many reefs in the Newport area. Most  produced a few fish. The charter was scheduled for a Four hour sunrise trip. It worked out that we caught fish earl. We headed back to the  dock before 10:00am and the both men enjoyed the morning along the Newport shore line. I will  be out again soon Look for my report Until Then Tight Lines

Wind North east 15-20 Gust 30

My charter today with Bill Gatley and Ed Gesiler and there friend Bob. We  meet at the boat ramp before 6:ooam Bill and Ed have fished with me early in the season it was  a first for Bob in RI. The wind was blowing from the North east    more than 15 as predicted. We decide to give it a try . With the tide  full around 7:00am the ride out was against a steady 3-4 sea. As we turned the corner I knew it would be difficult to work the structure. we did  fish for several hours but all we could  find was small Bluefish. The structure was void of bait and Stripers. We managed a handful of small Bluefish and  decided to call it early. The guys gave a great effort but it just  didn't happen. I will be out again soon  look for my report Until Then Tight Ines

Newport RI

On Sunday morning the rain was still in the area but it would let up early into the morning. The water temp and cool morning air gave the feeling of fall. The  surf  laid down a bit and the action would take me to the Newport area. Charles Lawrence fished with me  today and he had a field day.  The white water action was as good as it gets. Today  the fish of the year came to the boat it wasn't the biggest fish  but it put on the best show I have ever seen . We were catching Stripers tight to the structure and I mean tight  you needed to put it on the  rocks and slowly move it into the white water. Chip caught several nice fish and we had several legal fish. The best fish came when Chip said to me I  just  got hit and then nothing  again a near miss . As the bait was  retrieved with my attention away from the action, there was the sound of  a thunderous splash and Chip was tight to a very angry 31 inch Striper. This fish came right-out of the water it was the best hit I witnessed. Now when fishing top water plugs you expect huge commotion on the surface ,but with a swim bait, right at the boat. This fish wanted the bait and after  missing it twice there would only be one outcome. Chip fought the fish with great patience and soon we landed the beauty. It wasn't the biggest ever caught but it was one to remember. The whitewater action has been very good with the cool nights and strong surf the structure is alive. I will be out again soon look for my report Until Then Tight Lines

Saturday

September 12 2009

Saturday morning I was greeted by steady rain and  wind from the North East. the wind had been up all week and the surf was 4-5 ft at the entrance to the  bay. I put the boat in and decided to fish the Narragansett Bay area. The  bait around the boat ramp was plentiful. The water temp had dropped  to a cool 67 deg. I knew I would find  fish that had seemed to leave the bay in the weeks before. The Tide was rising and soon I would find  several fish among the rocks they were aggressive and  willing to take the offering. The Stripers were holding in the drop off at there edge of the structure.  The  bait of choice today was soft  plastic swim bait fish very slow. The Bluefish were more aggressive and just destroyed the bait with there viscous runs. It was great to have the action in the bay the fall will be hear soon and the fishing will get better in the bay. I will be out again soon look for my report. Until Then Tight Lines

 Captains Day

September 5 2009

Newport RI

 North east 10

My fishing charter today with Brad Evans  was canceled at the last minute due to health reasons. With the open day I decided to invite the neighborhood boys. Dan and Phil have fished with me many times in the past, but Phil spent the  summer in St Martin visiting family the poor kid. They are both great kids and very skilled fishermen. We were to meet at my home at 4:15 and they know to be on time. When 4:30 came and past I  pulled out of my driveway to do a drive by  Dan's home no sign of the boys.

Oh well,  I put the boat in the water and headed for Newport for a Captains day on the water. One thing about fishing alone extra care must  be paid to boat handling. I know where to cast and I can make the presentation. Let me say it was one of the best days of fishing  I have had. I wish someone was there to experience it with me. On almost every cast I had another schoolie Striper on the line, all the fish were between 24-31 inches . The  fish were tight to the structure and the presentation had to be right on the rocks. I did manage a few with the fly rod but most on light tackle. Other boats were around me and they  just were not getting it done.  As I tell all my clients when fishing this structure pin point  accuracy is very critical. Some days it is the difference between catching a few fish and catching dozens of fish. The swell was very large and positioning the boat  in these conditions takes  knowledge of the area and a watchful  eye on the water. It can be tricky when fishing alone. I caught more than 30 Stripers today all in the rocks and three fish of legal size, all released to fight again. After all you can only catch them once if you take them home. I headed back to the  dock before 9:00am. Great day on the water. It will only get better. I will be out again soon look for my report                    Until Then Tight Lines

September 4 2009

Newport RI

North East 10-15

Charter today with Charles (Chip) Lawrence. As we left the dock around 5:15 the full moon lead the way. Crossing under the Newport Bridge you would think it was sunrise the  moon was spectacular. Chip readied  his fly rod as I motored up to the reef under the moon. He made his first pass but no joy on the the third cast to the white water he came tight. Its a beautiful thing to  catch fish under these conditions. Size does not matter its the take that counts. Chip caught fish at every spot we hit at least one. There were a few Bluefish in the mix but over 20 Stripers were caught today and we never saw  breaking fish or  birds working over bait. Chip made many cast today and went to the spin rod as the conditions changed. It was a great  day on the water fall we will be upon us soon. The fishing is heating  up and I will be out again  Look for my report Until Then Tight Lines

September 3 2009

Newport RI

East Wind 5

 High tide 7:00am

Charter today with Dave Sims from New Jersey, Dave is visiting the Newport area and decided to try  light tackle fishing. We left the dock around 5:30 and the tide was above the normal height the reefs were swollen and there was no way  we could fish them safely. Plan B we moved along the coast line and worked the white water. Dave hit all the right spots and he  steadily put  fish in the boat all the Stripers were around 25-27 inches . Great fight considering the location we were fishing.  I like to call this is combat fishing. More than a dozen  stripers were caught today. Dave also landed a False Albacore from the Structure. He completed the RI Slam with a few Bluefish,

There was no bait around today and no birds working anywhere, what a difference a day makes. Dave managed to put a good number of fish in the boat today with precision casting and patience. Great job Dave

I will be out again soon Look  for my report Until Then Tight Lines

September 2 2009

Newport RI

 North East 5

Charter today with Gerry Coffey and John Dufresnse. We left the dock  around 5 am and headed in the Newport area. We arrived on the reef well before  sunrise and John soon had the first fish along side the boat. John continued to hook up and had 5 nice Stripers  before the sun was up a great start to the day. Gerry was a little slow getting started  but soon got into the action. Both Gerry and John caught over a dozen Stripers each ranging in size from 24-27 inches.   We lost the bite after the a few hours and decided to look for the Bonito and False Albacore. We found the fish feeding in the Narragansett area Gerry hooked up  first  but the fish thru the hook after a few minutes . John managed to  hook into a  False Albacore and  landed the fish after three very long runs.  John also managed to land Several Stripers and a few Bluefish. The fishing is great now and I will be out again tomorrow Look for my report Until Then Tight Lines

August 28  2009

Newport RI

North Wind

Low Tide  8:30 am

Charter today with Mike Topp and Tim Casewell. Mike is from Kentucky and Tim is from Mass. They have fished  with me in the past and were looking for a  day  of light tackle fishing. As we left the dock in the morning with the forecast of Hurricane Danny arriving over the weekend I knew we  would have building seas. But I Thought we could have good fishing. The bait yesterday was everywhere and I hoped  we would find the bait again today

As we crossed under the Newport bridge the Terns were already working with a few splashes  to make it interesting. I  wanted to be on the structure and couldn't get there fast enough. I pulled the boat up  to the first rock pile and the surf was very active just enough to discourage other boaters.  I stayed on the helm and positioned the boat as Tim made his first cast and came tight, Mike followed with another fish. It was the same all morning  fish after fish the hits just keep on coming. Most fish where in the  25-30 in range. On light tackle in the big surf there is nothing better. The fisherman has to make a good presentation while the Capt keeps the boat in position.  The fish were holding tight in the White water. Mike and Tim did a great job and landed more than a dozen fish each.. It was a great morning and the bite slowed at the bottom of the tide. I believe the conditions today  were affected by many things the cooler air temp along with pre storm conditions  turned them on. Either way it was a thing of beauty and we were the only boat working the reefs. I will be out again soon look for my report

Until then Tight Lines

Aug 27 2009

 Newport RI

North East 10-15

The fishing in the last  two weeks of  August has brought many challenges for the fly and light tackle fisherman. The week before Hurricane Bill arrived  Aug 16-21 Was very HOT with the air temp in the 90  and the humidity also in the 90% range the bite was over early in the morning. Catch them quick. Most Captains were on the water early and back in early also. The bite  would  turn off like a light switch, Hurricane  Bill arrived  with big surf and loads of debrie in the water.  No fishing weekend Aug 22-23

Thursday Aug 27 A cold front moved into the area and the fall like conditions feel great. But you can't have your cake and eat it to. The conditions will change again and the bait is scattered along the coast of R.I.  Charles Lawrence and I headed out of Portsmouth with the  tide heading out of the  Bay and the  wind pushing it out, fishing should be good along the Narragansett shore.

As I settled on the structure to start our day, on the  first cast Charles reel was screaming as the fish made a great first run. A beautiful 30 In Striper came in the boat, great start to the day. The birds were working on a school of harbor blues just off shore. We settled in on the small 2-3 Bluefish for a short time. Deciding to seek out larger fish we headed into Newport for the Structure fishing. The trip finished with  more than a Dozen Stripers and 20 Bluefish. The bait was everywhere and theTerns were very active. It looked  very fishy.

I will be  be out again Look for my  report. Until then Tight Lines

Newport RI

Haze and Fog

Today I fished with Chip Lawrence we left the dock around 5:00am and  we decided on the Newport area. Chip and I fished  together before and we hoped for some hard tail action. There  was bait in the area the birds were all over. The splashing fish with there broad tails told me the Stripers action would not last to long. Catch  them quick  and we did. Many nice Stripers and several Bluefish were landed today. Most fish were of the mid 20 inch range in  size but we did  have at least three fish over 30 inches. The reefs gave up several nice fish in the white water  and the action was steady.. The  heave fog rolled in around 9:00am and the action was slowed .  This could be a  break out time the bait is  in the area the water temp is  still  ok. I will be looking for  some  serious action in the next 2 weeks. I will be out again soon. Until Then Tight Lines

August 12

Block Island

 Wind East North East

Wednesday I fished today with a fellow Capt Ray Stachelek, Cast a Fly Charters. We sailed on Rays boat and  left the dock before 5:00am in hope of  finding big Stripers. The deep water fishing today was a different game. The Bluefish  have moved in and they are ready to pounce on the offering. Bluefish every where,  we moved into the shallows  after the tide turned and worked the structure close to the shore in hope of finding Stripers. Soft plastics  took most of the fish today with a few on the Fly rod. Most fish we in the 30 inch  range very nice Stripers on light tackle. Top water plugs were ignored today as the  Stripers were holding  tight to  the rocks. The bait in the area is scattered but there are plenty of Sand eels to make it interesting.

Thanks Ray  for the day as usual it was a pleasure.

I will be out again soon look for my  report. Until Then Tight Lines

August 8 2009

Block Island report

Saturday August 8 fishing around Block Island continues to be good. Although the water temp in increasing  daily, the fish have started to move into deeper water. The tactics  need to change to catch the big one. Vertical jigging water  in the 50   ft range has proven to take some very nice fish. There is a time when you need to give the fish  what they want and where they want it.  Fly fishing can still work early in the day but as the sun rises the bite move s to deeper water. All the fish today were taken in the  deep water. Stripers above 30 lbs  came aboard today it was a very successful day

On the Rocks Charters Fishing Report

It has been a while since my last report. This is not due to the fishing or the fishing conditions. The conditions could not be better. The water temp and amount of bait make for outstanding fishing opportunities for the Fly-fishing and light tackle enthusiast.

During the past month my obligations have left me with little time on the computer, and it's time to get back on track. I have fished over the last month in the Newport area as well as the South County areas from Point  Judith to Block Island.

The bait of choice is Sand eels the Block Island area is loaded with small sand eels and the Stripers and Bluefish are feeding heavily. Soft plastics and top water bait will do the trick.

Big fish can be found on the South side of the Island with the favorable tides the fishing is hot for those who can navigate in the morning fog.

The Newport area has slowed a bit with the baitfish scattered along the coast. The reefs early in the month were busting with big Stripers feeding in the first few hours of the day. The bite died off after the sun rose above the horizon. The fishing in the South County beaches has proven to be far more consistent.

There have been reports of the Bonito in the Block Island area, I have not caught them but I have seen several on ice at the dock and I do know the fish were taken in the Block Island area.

On my charter yesterday I found Bluefish in the 3-5 lb range along the south county beaches. The baitfish in the area today, loads of small Peanut Bunker. There were birds working the small bait along the beach. Things will only get better, I will be out again soon And I will post a  report.

 Until Then Tight Lines

August 3 2009

Point Judith RI

 Morning FOG

Today I fished with Ted Damgard and his son John. They are experienced fishermen  with light tackle. John  is 10 years old but  has the fishing savvy of years beyond his time. We left the dock around 6:00am and the fog was settled in heavy.  I motored out  of the  harbor and headed West along the beach. The sound of the Terns working over bait led me right to the fish in the  morning fog. John knew  exactly what to do when his line came tight. He worked his way around the boat like a seasoned angler. John and Ted  managed to land many Bluefish in the 3-5 lb range. All fish were landed on Top water and swimming plugs. Double hook ups were the order of the day.  Ted and John kept me very busy today.

John did also land his personal best Striped bass a very nice 28 inch fish that he proudly released. After all l you can only catch them once if you take them home. I am sure John will remember his visit to RI  and I hope he never loses the passion for fishing. He and his Dad will have a never ending bond.   Take a kid fishing soon. Maybe take your Dad

I will be out again soon  Until Then Tight Lines

July 31 2009

Artie Loomis

Block Island

Today I fished with Artie Loomis is a college student at SUNY Cortland in Utica NY  Artie is a senior and loves to fly fish.We fished  last year and he was looking for bigger and better fishing. Artie fishes for all species in fresh water Trout  mostly.

Well, within a half hour of departing, Artie was hooked-up with a 29'' Striped Bass! I'll never forget the look on his face. That hook-up at first light, facing the sun, a solid strip-strike, and then the sweet sound of screaming drag! After that we were into fish for the next couple hours. Artie landed  many  more stripers in the same area, with a couple follows as well. All of the fish were mirror images of each other 28 '' to 30" and fat!

After the tide washed out the good fishing we had, we decided to work the shoreline looking for birds and fish on top. Fog limited us for a while, so we stopped at an area that was one of my favorites at this stage of the tide and sure enough Artie  landed another Striper. The  weather changed  for the worst and we fished into some heavy  rain but it was early and we  had more work  ahead of us. Artie landed several Bluefish  with his best at 7 lbs, he was impressed with the fight of this toothy critter.

Artie is one of the purest  fly casters I have fished with. Great  job and hope we can do it again. I will be out again soon Look for my  report Until Then Tight Lines

Trout Fishing

Deerfield River Float trip

Harrison Anglers

If you logged in and went  to the 2009 Pictures  you could  wonder what gives, funny looking Stripers. Well today I fished for Trout on the Deerfield River with Dan Harrison  of Harrison Anglers. I have client's who guide on the Big horn in Montana  and I  have tried to get out  to hook up with them. The timing  with our season is prohibitive. Guess what  there is a trophy Trout river in Western Mass where you do a float trip with a First class operation. Dan Harrison and his brother Tom are top notch guides and know the river like the back of there hand.

I was excited and nervous at the same time. I have not fish trout like this before and never from a boat. What a thrill. This is a big river white water rafting type. And the boat was as comfortable as  you could imagine. The fishing is more difficult than I thought, these guys work  hard to put  the client's on fish. To maintain  the perfect drift with minimal  drag on the fly in Gin clear water takes an effort from the boat handler and  the fisherman.

To watch Dan maneuver the boat in the fast moving water is a task in itself, and he  made it seem effortlessly. And to watch the Trout come from below only to reject the fly why? I want to thank Dan for his patience as I only stuck one fly in a tree.  Oh and I  wrapped the leader a few times, its not easy  tossing 2 files under branches. I caught Bookies  that are wild and Brown Trout also Rainbow's these fish were thick, and in the fast water they put up a good  fight. This is not a wade able river no access points which keeps the fishing pressure down. I can tell you  this I will be going  back in the fall. The  view of the mountains  surrounding the river is nothing  short of spectacular. That alone is worth the ride. Check it out.

So if this something you would like to do you can't go wrong with Dan or his brother Tom with Harrison Anglers. www.harrisonanglers.com

I enjoyed my day off and soon I will be  back  on the water fishing for the Stripers.  Look for my report Until Then Tight Lines

Newport Area

Fishing Report

Monday July 6 2009

Fishing the Newport reefs are  worth the look right  now the fish are feeding on small bait in the white water.  The flood tide on Monday brought  some of the best top water action I have seen  in a while. The fish were a little spooky and the sound of the boat did send  them deep. If you sat in the area  they continued to feed. the fly fishing  guys had a little more trouble coming tight but they were rewarded for there efforts. The  top water plug  work  today Needlefish  in White did the trick. Soft plastic also  white  Slug go. Now is he time to be on the water the rain has done one thing it  helped to  keep the water cool. I will be out again soon look for my  report Until Then Tight Lines

Independence Day weekend

I would like to take a moment to thank all the men and women who are serving our great country. And hope they are safe and can return to there  loved ones soon.

Now let me apologize for the lack of fishing reports, things should get back to normal soon. Technical difficulties and the bad weather has set me  back a bit .

The fishing  over the weekend  was as could be expected considering the amount of rain we have seen in the Month of June it rained 20 or more  day's in June with well over 7 inches accumulated . So the condition of Narragansett Bay is off colored or stained  you could say. The Bluefish are every where with most being in the small size. There are schools of 4-6 lb Bluefish around. The Striper's are still in the Bay but you have to seek them out of the rocks.

Fishing out side in the Newport area is hot now and the Block Island is going strong. I  fished the bay over the weekend  and Bluefish were every where. Today I fished the Newport area and found lager school's of Stripers feeding on the surface. The fish ranged in size with most in the legal size some very nice fish were taken today in 20lb class. So it looks like the Newport area will be fishing well at least for a while. Tomorrow full moon will help the water quality in the bay and things will get back to normal. If the weather will stabilize we can get on with summer and hope for tight lines.

I will be out again soon look for my report  Until Then Tight Lines

Fathers Day Weekend

 Saturday June 20 2009

 Narragansett Bay

Tide high 6:20am

 Wind North East 10-15

Happy fathers day to Tom Goyette who celebrated the day on the  water with his 12  year old son Ryan. Tom has done  some saltwater fishing but Ryan has only fish in the  ponds and streams in the area. Tom's   hope was to  let Ryan experience the pull of the bigger fish, today that happened.  We left the dock around 5:15 and the fog was  thick the visibility  was lest than a  1 /4 mile and we were motoring with the aid of  electronics. I settled into the area I liked  at this time of the tide. Tom started the day off  with a nice striper on the surface pug as we explored in the fog. Ryan soon followed with a fish of his own a very nice Bluefish on10lb tackle  Ryan played it nicely but the lack off wire allowed the fish to swim away with the plug as I  tried boat the toothy  fish. The fog would not give way so we worked the areas close to shore the structure was at flood tide and we found fish  holding in the rocks. Ryan hooked and landed  4 fish today up to 29 inches and had a good day but .Tom more than doubled the performance after all it is fathers day. Ryan would say he wanted it that  way.  Both father and son had a great day. I  am glad I could be part of it. Thanks

I have already canceled the charters for Sunday and Monday due to the predicted weather forecast. The rain will stop soon, I HOPE. I will be out again soon look for my report. Until Then Tight Lines

Wed June 17 2009

Narragansett Bay

 Tide Low 8:20 AM

I left the dock around 5:00am looking for the early morning bite. As I worked the structure I could not believe the change in the weather. For weeks we have had nothing but rain,  today it was  blue bird sky's. The bite started slow and the fishing would pick up as the tide turned. I turned a few fish over early  but they refused the fly I  finally landed two 25in fish on structure. The tide  just about low and I needed to  look beyond the bridges to see if the fish were moving out. The water in the bay is stained form all the rain.  Upon leaving the Bay I found birds working over  small Bluefish 1-3 lb. Loads of action but not what I  was looking for. Covered the water from Newport to Narragansett and  loads of Bluefish. At the end of the trip I found Stripers working the surface on a popular flat and landed 15 very nice fish on the fly. It was a good way to end the trip.

I will be out  again soon look for my report. Until Then Tight Lines

June 16 2009

location Block Island

Outgoing tide

Fished the evening tide with fellow Capt and  good friend Capt Ray Stachelek  aboard his new 23 ft Everglades. We have talked about going out and fish the  boat but the opportunity has not worked out. Well last eve we departed for the evening tide on Block Island. First let me  say this is a sweet ride and we put it  through its paces. The seas were rough and the fishing was fast. Ray's son Scott joined in on the action and we put  some serious fish in the boat. Ray and I worked the fly rods while Scott chose to toss live  eels. The flies out fished live eels in a big way. All the fish that came to the boat were in the same  range most if not all were above the 28 inch legal size. There were a few fish in the 20 lb class. After 2 hours on constant action on the fly rod we  had to switch to  top water plugs as the surf was out of control. Capt Ray was at the helm while Scott and I  landed one striper after another. We caught fish from 3:30 pm until we called it after 8:00pm. Capt Ray did a great job keeping us on the fish and the boat was more than up to the task. It is truly a fishing machine. Ray good luck with the Everglades.

Block Island is on fire now and should stay that way for a few more weeks to come. I know I will try to fish the Island when possible. I will be out again soon look for my report Until Then Tight Lines.

June 8 2009

High tide 9:00am

 North East 10-15

Today's  charter with Charlie Gendron and Tim Sheehan both men are from Massachusetts and Charlie has fished with me before. Tim has done some saltwater fishing. The morning started off a little slow with the weather in the cold front mode we searched for  signs of fish. I covered all the spots that have  given up fish  this week and there was nothing. After several hours we finally hooked up. and Charlie landed a small striper. Tim was still looking his first  hook up. Charlie dropped another  fish and we continued the search. It was close to quitting time and I decided to make a run and try  one more spot. When we arrived the fish swirled on the soft plastic still no joy. I  put on a top water plug and then it happened the fished  just  slammed it. The game was on. we extended the trip to a full day and landed fish for the next 2 and half hours. YES!!!  I lost count but 2 fish over 28 inches  stripers came to the boat and  several Bluefish in the7 Lb  range. Both men landed many fish both Stripers and blues.  It was a great way to end the day.

Out again soon look for my report  Until then Tight Lines

June 6 2009

 High tide 8:05 am

 North Wind 10

Today's charter was with Bill Fibiger and his daughter Dorothy who is a Brown graduate student. Bill is from Albany NY. While visiting his daughter they would take in some fly fishing on Narragansett Bay. They both  fish a great deal together and this area is new to them. The wind  was  blowing North 10 and gusting when we left the dock and the tide was coming in. Conditions were less than favorable for the long  rod. Both can cast  the fly rod but the wind was a bit much for Dorothy and she started to work the top water plugs on a spin rod. Bill started the action off with with a nice fish and  followed with a several more. Before it was over Dorothy finished the morning with several nice fish. A dozen fish were caught today with two fish  just at the legal size. It was a good day considering the conditions facing us. Bill and Dorothy worked  hard today  for the fish they caught. Thanks for the effort nice job

I will be out again tomorrow look for my report  Until Then Tight Lines

Sunday

Wind SW 10

Low Tide 8:03

Fished today with Bill and Nancy  Hession from North Carolina. The  are retuning to RI  for a visit to  Newport where they meet 19 years ago while in the Navy. We started out today with acres of  splashing  Stripers that were feeding heavily on a  very solid Worm hatch.  Cinder  worm's emerge from the muddy bottom of back bays and estuaries. During this time the fish are so  focused on the hatch  it can be a challenge to hook up. Today it was not going to happen the worms were in the 3/4-1 inch in size and the were darting around  in all directions. We worked over the fish for more than  an hour as Bill did manage one hook up. The tide was dropping  fast and we just had to move on. Several fish bent the rod today  and Nancy got in on the action with spin gear. The big fish of the day threw the hook just before we could leader the fish. Both Bill and  and Nancy had a great day and enjoyed the  return to the Newport area.

I will be out again tomorrow Look for my report Until Then Tight Lines

 wind calm

 Tide low 7:20 am

Today's charter was with Barry Digman  from New Mexico and his son Chris. They brought the good weather with them. It was the first  day this  year I felt  comfortable on the  water. It would reach 70 Deg today.

Barry has fished with me before but it was a first charter for Chris. The  tide was dropping, and would  start to  turn around 7:20 am. We left the dock around 5:30 and started  to work  the structure close to the  boat ramp. Barry was fly fishing and Chris was on a spin rod. That is the  best  combo you could have to cover the water  and search for fish. The first few spots we hit have  produced many fish for me in the past, but not today. We moved on to a spot that  fishes good on a flood tide. As we were passing  right by what the  heck. The low  light and  out going tide paid off  today.

The plug hit the water and the fish swirled on it but no contact,  and then  the fish just sucked the plug in. No big splash  just a  good solid take. At first I underestimated the  size of the fish.  Chris  was not working the fish to hard with 10 lb test line. We got lucky as the fish headed for open water. So many times a fish of this size will  take you  to the  rocks and end the fight quickly, especially in shallow water.

Chris did a great job and soon we had this  40 inch  fish along side the boat It weighted in at just over 20 lbs. and was  released to fight again.  We had  double digit fish today with another  legal size fish that was released also.  Things  could be  starting to heat up. I will be out again tomorrow look for my report

Wind North 10

 High 9:33 am

First I cant believe its Memorial Day already. Before you know it , it will be the 4th of July.

Today's charter with Georg Koukkos and Andera Chong found us leaving the dock at 5:30 AM  and the wind was from the North around 10 MPH. The temp would reach 75  but the question WHEN. The fishing  was the same as it has been all spring very tough. George and Andrea caught fish today but worked for all they  caught. After the tide flooded  the bite improved , we found fish on structure.

All the fish were in the 24-27inch range no big fish came to the boat today. The weather pattern will chnage this is New England after all. Wait it will change it always does. The fishing will improve. The fish are starting to show on the rocks plies and  drop off's. They are looking for food. And the experienced fisherman will catch fish like always. I will be out again soon  look for my report Until Then Tight Lines

 FOG

Today  charter with Dave Brightman and his girlfriend Omaira. They live in NY City and  are in Newport to get away from the busy life of the city. Neither Dave or his  girlfriend have ever caught a fish before.

The fishing in the Ocean state  has been in a WORD unpredictable. After working the Structure yesterday with only a few strikes I  thought it was time to change things ups. The fish are  sticking with the big bait in the Bay, find the bait  and you find fish. Easy said than  done. So today I  went after them with  a different approach. Go deep my friend, and we found fish  right away.  Both Dave and Omaira caught there first fis today .

This was a rained shortened trip with the weather and the  cool morning from the fog we were back on the trailer early. Both enjoyed the day and caught  several fish each.

I will be out again tomorrow look for my report. Until Then Tight Lines

 Wind South West 10-15

Today charters with John Scelfo from Washington State. John  has  fished with me for years. He has  had the good fortune of  excellent fishing conditions every time  he  is in town. John and I  had  planed to fish on Monday and Wednesday this week . Monday was  a day to stay inside. North wind 15 with the air temp of 48 deg. Add a steady rain and  I decided to call the day off. John  and I  fished today with improved conditions. John brought  7 fish  to the boat today and lost  two more. That is considerably better than yesterday. What a difference a day makes. John's big fish was 34 inch in the 15  -18 lb range. His biggest striper on a fly. John and I will make up for  Monday with a charter on Thursday if the weather holds, this is New England .  I still have a few open dates  in the last week of May don't miss out. Hope to be out tomorrow  look for my report Until Then Tight lines.

Tide Low 9:20 am

NE wind 10-15

Charter today with David Speicher from Michigan. Dave  has fished me  for several years he is the early season  type of guy. He and his wife enjoy  Newport area with fewer people in early May. Sometimes the fishing can be great early  and not so good at times. Yesterday it was not so good. The cold front  changed the fishing conditions, and David paid the price. We covered many miles of area that has worked for me in the past but the fishing Gods were not on board today. Dave was a gracious  sport and will return in the fall.   The weather system is making a  move  and things should heat up. I will be out again tomorrow Until then Tight Line

Sunday May 17

Tide Low 8:33

Wind S.E. 15

The 2009 season is under way and the fishing is weather dependant. The weather system will settle out the fishing will improve. I set out this morning with out an going tide and before I  hit open water I  had a  solid worm hatch around the boat. Most of the time this can be a kiss of death. The worm hatch can be difficult to connect. I found  a fly they liked and  put 6 nice fish in the boat before the hatch ended. The big fish  was 27inch around 7lbs. all others were 20-24 inch  fish.

I  did manage to put  a few more fish in the boat and they were in the same size range. When the tide changed so did the  weather system Cold front moving in and the wind turned to the North with gust in the  25-30 range. Not the weather I was hoping for  but this is New England.

I will be out this week with charters  into mid week look for my reports. On the Rocks  Charters  2009 season is under way and it looks to be a good  year. Still  have a few open dates before the end of May and June is filling in. Don't miss out  Lets hook up. Until Then Tight Lines

Soon the big bait will appear Bunker and the fish will really turn on. The Squid run is in good shape with loads of Squid to be had. They make great table fair as well as forage for hungry Stripers. I have a few dates open in May with June starting to fill in.

 wind Calm

Fished today with Chip Lawrence, we had an early start and the action was fast . Today we had a mix bag of Stripers  and Bluefish up to 10 Lb. The bait was stacked up and the fish were slashing into the  bait balls. The action covered miles of the South Shore. At times the bait was abundant  the fish had no interest in our offerings. The fall run is truly  under way. The weather was outstand the last  two days and looks good for the coming week. Look for my reports Until Then Tight Lines.

Sunday

Wind Calm Light Rain

Today's charter with Ron Boehm and Andy DiPaolo,. When I arrived at the dock I  noticed the wind had finally  laid down. My thought was it would be a good day. As my sports arrived the light rain started to fall and as we  headed South under the Jamestown Bridge the rain became more intense. We reached the area  where I have had success and the birds were high  in the air things would happen soon. Within  a short time we were into fish and the rain and the fish stayed with us for the next 3-4 hours. Both Ron and Andy had many fish in the 4-6 lb range . With both Ron and Andy hooked up at the same time more than a few times. What a difference a Day makes. Yesterday  I had birds and bait all day with only  five strikes, that's fishing. All the pieces are in place for a great fall and still time to get out and wet a line. I  know I will . Look  for my report. Until Then Tight Lines.

46 Degrees

Wind WNW 15-20

Charter Today with Dave Howe and his son Dave Jr. We left the ramp around 8:00am as the tide flooded Narragansett Bay. Soon we were into  diving birds. The bait was thick but there were no fish with them. We moved on and found the same every where we looked. More bait with  very few signs of fish. We covered  miles today and only had  a handful  of strikes. The fish should be pounding the surface with the amount of bait in the water.  The fish  have to be somewhere.   Usually  you find the bait  you  find the fish. Dave and his son had a good day on the water. Quality time  spent enjoying the moment. I will keep looking, out again tomorrow Look for my report.

Wind West 15-20 Gusting

My charter today with Marion Quina and Teeto Graham from Mobile Alabama. They  are in Newport area for a  conference and  wanted to fish RI. The weather at the ramp in the morning was less than desirable. Thunder and lightning lit the sky as I  drove to the ramp, and we left in a steady rain. But we headed out to give it a try. We headed into the wind out the West passage of the Bay. My thought looking for protection from the big wind. Marion started us off with a nice Bluefish from the rocks. We worked structure as the tide flooded the  bay. The fish just kept on coming. Soon we had working fish within our  reach and both men scored again and again. 8-10 lb Bluefish was the average today and they were feeding heavily on small bait. Both men were well into the double digit fish in both numbers and weight. Many  6lb-8lb fish were caught with several 10lb fish. Anchovy in the 1-2inch range was the bait of the day. The top water action was non stop .Out again soon Look  for my report Until Then Tight Lines.

Wind East North East 10-15

Charter today with Rich Milnor and his fishing  partner Mike Hunter. Both men are from Virginia. Rich has fished with me before, this is Mike's first time in RI. With the wind from the ENE I decided to run out toward the West lying beach front. Hoping that the  push of wind and tide in that direction. I would find bait and  fish along that stretch of shore line. I knew it would be  short trip with the predicted storm front and forecast of big wind. Upon arriving  I spotted the sign of life and we were in the game. Mike started us off with a nice 5 lb bluefish. the action continued for the next 2 hours  we had a few double hook up, and several quick release. The birds were on the bait and the fish were feeding, things could be  looking up. The storm this coming weekend will set the stage for the fishing in the next week. I will be out again on Friday Look for my report Until Then Tight Lines.

Weekend report

Charter on Saturday with Randy Lueth from Wisconsin. Randy has fished for many saltwater  species, but never caught Striped Bass or a Bluefish. We took care of that on Saturday. Randy fly fishes for pike and Musky along with other fresh water game. He can throw the fly as good as most. He came  tight to his first Striper in the rocks along Jamestown. We covered  the water from Newport to Narragansett. The amount of bait was incredible. With the amount of Bait balls we found we should have hit a home run. Large schools or bait with little or no fish around. We found one fish  hear and one there. Mixed bag of Stripers and Bluefish

Jill,Randys wife joined  us on Sunday and again the bait was thick in Narragansett Bay we caught Bluefish today one fish would splash and we  hooked up. Another splash and another Bluefish. Not the carnage you would expect with this much bait in the water.  The bait is hear the fish should  be also. when the fish  find the bait it will be epic. I will be  there when it happens. Look for my report. Until Then Tight Lines.

Sept 17 2008

North 10

Point Judith

Charter today with Pat Gates and his nephews Bill Pacheco and Scott. We started the day off early with a few quick strikes  with  quick releases at the boat  school stripers fought until they tossed the hook . Several Bluefish and  Stripers  landed today. But the good news signs of bait fish in the area along the beach front. PEANUT BUNKER. for the first time I  had balls of bait around the boat. Soon the  small Bluefish could be replaced with Albacore. That is what we are  waiting for, the weather pattern looks good for the coming week. I will be on the water look for my report. Until Then Tight lines

 Sept 8 2008

Update

It has been a while since last report not because I  have not  fished just  busy with the holiday and all the  family functions. So labor day has come and gone  with the hurricanes season upon us. The fishing trips have been a mixed bag with a  split between Stripers and Bluefish the RI coats line has  held little or no bait. The fish are scattered  around Structure in deep water. The fishing has been slow for the fly fishing guy but the spin  fisher who goes deeper will be rewarded. The storm of the weekend which brought heave rain and strong wind, could be a blessing the bait  started to fill in and there are reports of Albacore along the beaches. things could heat as the seas calm down. I will be out soon look for my report. Until Then Tight Lines.

Block Island

My charter  today with Don Erwin and his son Brian, we would be fishing the Block Island area. My  past several charters  are out on the Island. I have searched the beach front  for activity and fond the Block Island  area to be the only consistent fishing at this time. Brian and Don were on the boat early and we had the lines in the water before dawn. Brain started us off before the sun was up. and we never looked back it was non stop for  three hours. Brian is  like a machine when he was tight  he wasted no time getting the fish to the boat and down for another. Don  did his share of damage also, slow and steady wins the race. 10 stripers came along side today with 2 legal fish, more bluefish than I could count all in the 5-6 lb range. It was epic, we left  the honey hole before 9:00am  to curse the beach in hopes of finding some other action.  Don had the big fish today but Brian  put the numbers on the boat in a big way. Great job  by both angler's  today.

I will  be out again tomorrow. Until Then  Tight Lines

 Tom and Kerri Laviano

Today charter was to be a fly fishing trip with Tom Laviano  at the last minute he decides to  bring his wife Kerri. No problem I have tackle on board and  can adjust easily. The meeting this morning brought with it the wind that I didn't expect. Fly fishing would be a challenge, and with Kerri on  board the trip to the Block Island could be sloppy. We headed out  for the Island and the  seas were not to bad the speed was slower than I would like but we were dry. Kerri  was rock solid on the trip out despite the conditions. As we started our drifts the conditions were very fishable.

Upon arrival Tom  started us of with the spin rods and I  worked on Kerri's technique in no time we had double fish on  it  lasted for three hours. Both Tom and Kerri caught  a mix of Stripers and Bluefish . The big Striper by Kerri was just under the legal size 27 inches.  30 -40 good size Bluefish came in also the big one weighed 9-10 lbs. We headed back to the dock as the tide changed. Great fishing  in less than 4 hours. out again soon look for my report/ Until Then Tight Lines

Fished today with Phil Steriti  and Sharon Rexford on a recreational fishing trip. I decided to try something different other than my normal structure fishing. Sharon and Phil caught many  nice Bluefish with the big fish around 8 lbs. Sharon also caught her first Striper.  The action was very solid until the tide change and we lost the bite it was a early  day ,back on the trailer around 10 am With around 20- 25 Bluefish landed.

Fished today with Jerry Yuen and Todd Maitland. they are in Rhode Island working as  part of the  crew for the TV Show Brotherhood. The series is shooting in Providence and near by locations. Jerry and Todd are form NY and  decide to fish  while on there off weekend. We  left  Point Judith in search for Stripers. We  headed for  Block Island early and  the ride out was  better than I expected with the Westerly  wind. Upon arrival  Todd got the action going and we fished hard for the next 2 hours. The big fish measured 32 inches and several were caught in the same size . When the tide filled in the bite slowed.  Top water plugs did the  trick today. Jerry and Todd landed many very nice fish and  did a good job with the conditions.  Block Island is  still fishing strong the key is get them early. I will be out  again tomorrow Look for my report Until Then Tight Lines

Newport

 Wind Calm

Steve Gewirz and his boys Malcolm 9 and Jack 11 fished with On The rocks today. With the full moon and  heavy tides  we were in for a challenge. But it was a beautiful day and Steve and the boys were have fun. Malcolm started us off with a nice fish from the rocks, these boys can fish. the water was calm and the drift were slow. We worked the structure from top to bottom. The fishing has been off this month and it should change soon. There is little sign of bait fish and if there is no bait the fishing will be slow. I will be  out looking all week . thanks to Steven Jack and Malcolm for there effort. Until then Tight lines.

Newport  Monday Aug 11  charter I decided  to reschedule, due to the weather . With a local client filling  a open day was  a good thing. The 2  young boys deserve a better day. Malcolm and Jack Gewirz  and there father Steven

Point Judith Tuesday  I took a day of recreational fishing with the  three boys from the hood. The wind and  conditions were not the best  but I wanted to do some scouting  for my next charter. Some Bluefish and One very nice Striper was released before we could get  a picture.

Point Judith Aug 13  charter today with Dave Dziemian and  his good friend Jason Kenyon. Both are very good fly fisherman and presenting the fly would not be  a problem. now all I had to do is  find the fish. We started out working a few holes along the beach and were not having much  success. I discussed the options with Dave and Jay and we  decided to change  the plan. As we were moving out Jason  caught the sign of activity and we were into fish for the next 2 hours. We had  double fish on every attempt. The Bluefish were in the 3-5 lb range and they were feeding on small bait. This was a  good sign of things to come. The Bonito will be hear soon. With report of the Bonito  along the CT. coast soon they will be in our yard.

We finished out the  trip with some reef fishing  as we searched for Bonito along the Narragansett shore line. Jason landed a Striper along the rocks.

I have very few open dates left in August Lets hook  up. I will be out again soon Look for my report until then Tight Lines

Saturday Aug 9 2008

North Wind Again

The cold front is starting to show sign of weakening. Soon the fish will be on the feed  making up for lost time. The fishing has been a challenge to say the least. Today trip found  few fish on the structure and no working  birds to lead the way. My client Jim Chanko  worked  for everything he got today. It will get better there will be bait again the signs are there in the Boat ramp area  many small baits holding tight. I will be out again look for my report.

The Fluke fishing is going strong and the Sea bass are in good numbers.

High 7:21 Block Island

Today's charter with Tom Drongoski and Tom Hunkele came together at the last minute. We arranged to meet in Point Judith around 4:45 am they were on time and ready to go. Leaving early with fog coming in under low light  conditions  calls for every  pair of eyes on the boat  looking out.  Safety is a concern I headed to  Block Island with around 1/4 mile visibility. As we approached New harbor the sky turned black. I stop the boat and we broke out the rain gear. The sky opened up just as we continued on our way. ten minutes of driving rain  and I eased  back on the  throttle.  The rain gave way to  clear skies before we started fishing. Soon it was fish on, the feisty Bluefish came to the boat on the first cast. The hits just kept coming and the Stripers were getting bigger. Tom H. landed a nice 34 in 15 lb striper and a few others. while Tom D worked on fish of his own, Both men caught Stripers and Bluefish today. 3 Stripers over 30 inches came in the boat  with several big fish  lost before they were on the leader. 12-15 fish were landed today. A good day of fishing and the men were thrilled to fish the Block. Out again tomorrow look for my report. Until Then Tight Lines.

High 5:30 am

Fished today with Kevin Varley from New York and his Brother in laws Brian and Rob. They are spending a week  visiting the beaches of  Rhode Island. we decided to hit one of my spots along the beach front, after a few short moments I realized there would be little action . So I decided to make the run to Block Island with its cooler water and more  bait fish. My clients have not been in RI and to fish a premiere location like the Block they were excited. When arriving on the West side of the Island  info from a fellow Capt put us into fish. Kevin hooked up with his first Striper on  a Fly rod nice job. All three men caught and released  fish today  both Stripers and Bluefish. Out again soon Look for my report

 Wind South 10-15

High Tide 10;10 am

Charter today with Larry Hrbek and his  fishing partner Mark Malina from New York. They were looking  to finish a fishing weekend in RI . They  started in Conn. on Friday and Fished the Cape on Saturday  and book  with On The Rocks  for Sunday. They  had good fishing all weekend and I need to  find some fish. The weather man said it would blow  from the South 20. The swell was 3-4 when we started and the interval was evenly spaced. Larry started us off with a  nice 28 in Striper and soon after Mark  was tight to a good fish. The drag was screaming and the fish cleared the rocks. Soon we were in to  a lobster pot but the fish and lost the battle by then. We cleared the pot and I  hoisted a nice 32 inch Striper 15-17 lb . The safety of the client's  became a factor and we needed to  abandon our plan. The south lying reefs were now pounded with a 5-7 foot swell and the  interval had tightened up. we headed back into the bay  in hope for some action we found nothing and  called a day .out again soon  look for my report Until  Then Tight Lines.

 Saturday July 19

Wind South west 10-15

High Tide 9:15

I had an open day today and the boys from the Neighbor hood  are always ready to fish. The game plan was to start early and beat the heat. we left the dock around 4:30 and arrived in Newport around 5:00am. The  reefs were loaded with weed  this was more of a nuisance than a big problem. The weed collected on the line.  after a few hours we decided to fish   for dinner. The target species Sea Bass. good eating. The boys  know how to fish and soon had the hang of it. we caught Fluke Sea bass and Tautog. The boys well eat well tonight. 5 nice  sea bass and one  legal Fluke. Many sub legal fish were released today. Out again tomorrow. Look  for my report    Until Then Tight Lines.

South Wind 10

High  8:30

Rich Milnor and his son Guy along with his friend Jack fished the Newport area . The fishing is off   this week not sure if the  heat or the storms off shore, but the amount if bait is a factor. Rich and the boys caught fish and they worked for  each and every one. The stripers were in the 20-214 inch range. The fishing will pick up again soon  as we approach the time when the baby bunker make there appearance. I will be out again  soon Look  for my report Until Then Tight lines.

Sunday July 13, 2008

Weekend Report Friday/ Saturday /Sunday

Friday July 11 had open day and decided to check out Cape Cod Bay the report of Big Tuna and the prediction of favorable  wind direction. I put together a crew that like to fish for the  Tuna  Dave and Ron are alway's  up for the task.. We left Plymouth Harbor Early and headed across the bay to Providence  Town. We  found the most Whales I have seen at one time the show  was spectacular. The Whales were feeding on sand Eels and they were thick. This is a great recipe for Tuna but not on this day. We saw no fish  today and enjoyed the  wonder of mother nature. The whales are something to see. Check out the pictures

Saturday July 12    put me back in Rhode Island fishing the structure  in Newport the bait was scarce and the weather was beautifull. The Stripers were holding tight to the rocks and the  boys from the neighbor hood Dan Nick and Phil each caught fish. Nick  lost the fish of the day we never  put eyes on it, but the pull  told me it was a special fish.

Sunday July13 was a blow out wind from the South West in the 20 plus range   forced  us back to the dock around 8:30am. Tony and his children will be back for sure.  Jenna and Mike will get there day.. I   will be out again tomorrow  look for the report Until Then Tight Lines

 SW 10

 Low Tide 6:00am

Eric Nicolaisen and his  9 year old son Branden fished with me today. Eric  lives in Chester NH and meeting at the boat ramp at 5:00am  is asking alot. When we launched the boat  at 5:00 the tide was low and the water was calm. The water temp  was 74deg. with the tide low I headed to one of my best spots and we found nothing. I headed the boat deeper into the  bay and quickly realized that  it would be a tough  day. I decided to head South  beyond the  bridge to the Newport area with its cooler water. The Bait and the fish had the same idea.  We never made it to Newport I would rather be lucky than good. We found the fish and the game was on. Both Eric and Branden caught  fish today they had countless double hook ups at times. The fish were on bait in the 4 inch range and eating  anything in its path. Top water Acton today was  spectacular. The incoming tide brought cooler water into the bay and the  fish were active into the rising tide.  I will be out again this week look for my report Until Then Tight Lines

July 3 2008

Thursday  SW 10-15

John Spada  and his 8 year old  son Paul  fished  with  me today. John and family  are visiting friends in the Ocean State. We left the dock around 5:00am looking for Stripers on the structure. The fishing started off slow with only  one small Striper caught from the rocks. The bay is loaded with bait of all sizes, from 2 inches to  12-14 inch Menhaden. As we were traveling  from one spot to another  as usually happens we encountered  working birds over feeding fish. The game was on. Both John and Paul put a good number of fish in the boat. With the Bluefish splashing the surface Paul was very excited. Paul landed his first Bluefish , He made the cast and  set the hook and finished the  job .  Its great to get a young child hooked on fishing.
I will be out again over the weekend look for my report. Until Then Tight lines.

The  blues were feeding  most of the outgoing tide.

On Sunday  June 29 I fished with John  Small and his dad Tom.  Tom is a fresh water fly fisherman and today he  caught his first Striper and Bluefish on the fly. The fishing  ended with the Bluefish  making a short appearance on the  surface. John added his share of Bluefish with the spin rod.

Low tide 5:03 AM

 Charles Warren

Charlie was at the ramp around 5:00 am and we  headed into  the thick fog. The bay  was quiet and the  fog moved in quickly. I  set up on some rocks piles and the  fishing started, Charlie came tight  to nice schollie Striper. The skunk was out of the boat  and we were off. A short run around the Island and soon we were taking a few more fish the big fish of the day was only 26 inch Striper but he fought like a giant.  We settled  on a area that had fish working the surface. Charlie came tight to a few fish . I change flies  many times looking for the right combination, I believe they were feeding on small Crabs, Yes I do believe the crab hatch might be under way. Charlie  had a more than a handful of Stripers and a few Bluefish and  about 4-5 Flies lost to the Blues. I will be  out again soon Look for my report Until Then Tight Lines.

 Artie Loomis

I fished today with Artie and his dad Art, they are from New York and the drive to  fish has been in the planning for months. Artie is a fly fishing enthusiast who has worked hard on his casting. I  planed on leaving early  to try to  put him into a nice fish. The fish  had other plans , I covered the entire Bay for a handful of fish and there were no  large fish  taken today. Artie gave  great effort and I did  all I could do. Artie said it best the fish make the rules. The fishing has change in the  last few days. Out again tomorrow Look for my report. High Tide 4:40 am

Charter  with Dave Young from Tennessee the last  two days. On Thursday we encountered very difficult conditions. The weather has been hot  for a week and the water temp was climbing. The fish were sluggish and it was tough. Dave managed a few fish but the fishing was off. I had  told him we were going beyond the bridges on Friday.

Friday morning we left the dock early and  I had to hit a few of my favorite spots before we headed South. We had a couple  hook ups early and I received a call from another Boat Capt. There was bait and he was take fish.  The water temp dropped 8 deg. and the air  temp settled down. I tried another spot and hooked up there. We were on to something. The fish were active again and willing to play. Every where we fished we  landed at least one fish. Dave landed two very nice fish today  one 32inch- 13lb and the other  just under 30inches about 9-10 lbs. The excitement of the day came when the line was screaming off the reel and  we were tight to a bigger fish. Not today  soon we were parted but it was a great ride. I wonder how big. Dave had a double digit day today

I will be out again tomorrow look for my report Until Then Tight Lines

June 7 2008

 low tide 5:20am

This was and open day today  so I planed to fish with the three kids from the neighborhood. as it turned out  it was just Phil at my door this morning. The other two boys were not able to go. These kids are 15-16 years old and love to fish. Phil  was born in ST Martin  can you imagine, he has fished most of his life and he  can fish. He has talked of  catching Tarpon on a fly and Bone fish. I never caught a Tarpon. So all the times fishing with me he has spin fished, with only he and I  I  figured  why not I put him to the test.

When I offered him the 9 wt, there was a slight hesitation. But he grabbed the rod and went to the bow of the boat. Holy Molly this kid can do it all. He handled the rod like he fly fishes every day. He landed his first Striper on the fly and many more. Phil will be fishing the fly rod from now on when with me.

He also caught  several Striper on a spin rod Ultra light. The kids are all good fishermen and a pleasure to be with. When I have a open day they are welcome to join me. I will be out on a charter tomorrow look for my report Until Then Tight Lines.

light wind South East

Low tide 5:00am

Today I fished with Mark Lynch  from Florida. Mark is in town for a class reunion. We left the dock before 5:00 am and  started to work structure close to the boat ramp. The tide was low and the fishing would be slow for the first hour. we hit a few spots and decided to run to the area I caught fish  yesterday..

When we arrived the sky  opened  up and we put on the rain gear which we never were able to shed ,it rained all morning. Mark hooked up on a solid fish  just after we arrived  and took several more before the bite fell off.  We work structure all morning in different areas. when we finished Mark landed 9 Stripers the big one was 29 inches  and 3-4 Bluefish. We did not see any bait or birds working . The big fish eluded us today maybe tomorrow.

I will be out again tomorrow  Until Then Tight lines.

light rain

Wind North North East

 15 gust 0f 20

Charter today with Jim Hund and his daughter Lauren. Jim is from Texas and Lauren is a college student at Harvard. Jim has fished with me before and it was  the first time for Lauren. The weather was less than perfect  windy and light rain. The tide was low at 4:00 am and the conditions were typical for the way the season has been. We hit a few spots and both  Jim and Lauren  landed  fish but we were exposed  to the weather. Jim was throwing the  Fly rod and Lauren the Spin rod. I moved to an area I thought we could catch some Stripers with a little protection. We did find Stripers and stayed on them for most of the morning it was good enough  to keep me there.

Lauren had the big fish of the day with a nice 28in fish and Jim had the most with about 10-12 landed and Lauren landed 7-8 . But the story of the day was when Jim could not stop a fish in the rocks and we never saw it.  The fish  grabbed the fly and never hesitated  right into the rocks  Jim did all he could do> I wonder just how big.! Oh well that's the way it goes. out again tomorrow Until then Tight Lines

wind South West 15-20 with gust of 20

 High @ 5:18

A LITTLE WIND DON'T SCARE ME!! The forecast  almost  made me  miss today but to many times I  decide to sleep in and when I wake I release I could have fished for a few hours. Today I was at the ramp at 4:30  with the  three kids from the neighborhood. Dan Phil and Nick  they sometimes  fish with  me when I have open dates and they are  always on time. And did I say the can catch well they can. It was  blowing 15 when we put the boat in the water  and the tide  was full .  I thought we could  get  a few hours in and we did. We had a very good day considering the  conditions. There were many fish lost at the boat or long release let say but  15-20 fish came in the boat and 2 beautiful 30 inch Stripers  they were fat. check out the pictures.

The boys are  a pleasure to  have  on the boat and they enjoy the time we spend we talk fishing and we both Win, They do a great job of cleaning my boat after fishing. Thanks for the effort Phil. Dan  and Nick they are  great kids. Take a kid fishing. Out again tomorrow Until Then Tight Lines

 High 4:45

North Wind 10-15 AGAIN

My charter today was with Barry Digman from New Mexico. Oh and did I say today was May 30th for the end of May we should  be in a more settled weather pattern. I have fished 10-15 days this May and to tell it like it is ,the weather  has been less than stellar. May is  supposed to be a break out month, the signs are there  and there are fish around with large bait.  But I have not one time this season came across working birds or schools of fish. I have heard of surface feed's  going on , should have been hear yesterday.

Well today Barry work for every fish that came to the boat  and he did hit the double digit mark with the big fish of 25 inches.  Also the first Bluefish of the year came to the boat today. It seems early for them to be around. Any way  I will be out again  over the weekend and  things will turn  around  soon. Barry had a good day and he enjoyed the time on the Bay. He has visited RI many times and this was his first time fishing the Ocean State. He is good fisherman and tried his hand  with the fly rod  something to work on in the future.

I will be out  again soon Look for my report Until Then Tight Lines

Saturday May 24 2008

 Low 4:50 Am

Wind North 15-20

The forecast was for light and variable winds today >  Not today.

good day today with Barney Keezell and  his good friend Danna Wilson. Light tackle  trip  in Narragansett Bay the conditions were very tough today. But having good clients can make the day. My  two sports today were up for the task. we left the dock early with a  low tide.  We turned a few fish over early. It seemed like a long distance release was the order of the day. The wind picked up early and the fishing got tougher.  Barney and Danna are very good fishermen and they  made loads  cast today. I pulled a few trick out of the hat that made the day. The problem was we were drifting way to fast  to be in contact with the lures we were tossing. I needed to keep the boat in the zone long  enough but still cover the water. The top  water action was  as good as it gets and the conditions never let up the wind  continued to blow all morning Gust of 20 at times.

I would guess 25-30 fish with 2 legal  Stripers, boated and many more fish were on but never made it to the leader. Thanks for the effort today. Out again tomorrow  Look fro my report Until Then Tight lines

Sunday May 18,2008

 Tide 7:42 High

Wind 10-15 WNW

Sunday was a scouting day and  I started early, Hit one of my favorite rock piles and the fly line was tight on the first cast. Sweet some say this is a kiss of death I don't believe  it. I fished the rock pile's in the Bay looking for Bait and  signs of life. By the top of the tide I  caught and released  a dozen nice fish but nothing to  write home about. all fish were in the 25" range.

The talk is of big fish on  big bait  and I knew  that was old info they would be far from the report I heard. set out  find the action, Find the  flotilla of boats and most time  they are hanging Big  bait. I decide to get in the general area and dredge the bottom with the fly   line. The water was 25-30 feet deep and my 500grain line would get me in the  zone. The approach is to  let the fly sink and  start a  nice retrieve. I started with 30 count and  adjusted to  about a 45-50 second count. I  came tight  after about  5 or 6 passes and  at the depth  all fish feel  strong. I did manage 3 nice fish  the big one  around 30" but no  really big fish. The wind increased and ended my chance's with the fly rod.  The method works but  you need to be patient, it can be rewarding. I will be out again soon  look for my report Until Then Tight Lines

Wind light SE

Wed And Thursday  Fished with David Spechier form Michigan . Dave has fished with  me  for a few years and  seemed to always catch bad weather. Oct  has not been good to Dave and this year he  wanted to change it up. The weather was very nice the last two days and the fishing was good. It could have been better but there were plenty of fish around.  We saw no breaking schools of fish and no  diving birds.  Still Dave caught and released many nice fish over the last two days and  had  a great time in RI. He will be back again. I will be out over the weekend Look  for my report Until Then Tight Lines.

Sunday May 11 2008

Wind North 10-15 Cold 43 Deg

 Tide low 8:00am

Fished with Dan and Phil today they are local high school kids and they love to fish. They came along last  year with there third friend Matt.  Family obligation kept Matt on the beach we did miss him  he brings a sense of humor with him and it is a pleasure to have him on board. The three boys are avid fishermen and they have good skills. Dan  started the day of and we  brought many nice fish to the boat today. Most fish were on top water plug and a few on the fly rod. The fishing was a little off due to the cold front. We saw no birds working today,  we did all the working and it  paid off. The weather has been cold for this time of the year and the fishing is a little off but there are plenty of fish around . You just  have to look for them. I will have the boys out again in a week or so. It is my pleasure to  take them out. They are very respectful and polite. Who can ask for more than that. Take a kid fishing.

I will be out this week  Look for my report Until Then Tight Lines

Wed May 7 2008

Beautiful day

Fished today with a good friend Mark Kralian, We have fished together for over ten years and  it has been a while since we  were in the same boat. I  convinced Mark to  join  me today with the report I received from another Capt . The fish  had entered the bay with a decent push of fish. on Monday. Things do change from day to day  so you always have to have a plan. I did  and I stuck with it we caught  fish  most of the day in  many different places. When we  hooked one fish most  of the time we would take 6- 10 before we had to look on. The fishing  was not  hot and heavy but it was steady. We took 40-50 Stripers on the fly today  no very big fish but Mark did lose what look like a  legal fish. Most were 18-22 inches with  big ones measuring 24-25 . It was great and  I think  we will have a great season. I  have dates open  still in May so  lets hook up. Until Then  Tight lines

Every one caught fish and the a great time had by all.  The fish are here and the weather will break get ready. Look for my report Until Then Tight Lines

 May 1, 2008

Narragansett Bay

Let the games begin,  I put the boat in the water around 8:30 this morning with the Temp around 40 degrees.  The Mercury  turned over  immediately and with minutes I had a  line in the water.  My game plan was simple find fish I had heard of the small fish in the rivers .  The bay was holding bait there should be fish.  Within the first hour I was on structure  that  held a few fresh fish. They were in the 18 inch range with light tackle they  were a great start.

I switched to the fly rod and took another half dozen  with the big fish measuring 23 inches. All fish  had lice on them  which means they were not your  hold over  schoolies .  The big  fish will be here soon with the amount of bait around it should be a great spring. I will be out  again over the weekend look for my report. Until Then Tight Lines
