Fishing report On The Rocks Charter

October 5,2011

Sorry to say it has been a while since  my last report. All I can say is the fishing is very good along the  Rhode Island ocean front. During the past three weeks I have concentrated on fishing for the hard tail's in the area. False Albacore have actively feeding  along most of South County and along the Newport rocky shore line. There is a large concentration of bait along the Watch Hill area and the action  can be incredible. During the  past weeks my sports are landing  False Albacore up to 10lbs on both fly rod and spin gear. The Bay Anchovies are plentiful and  as long as we have bait we will see good fishing.

Narragansett bay is loaded with large bait Menhaden, there area school's of bait through out the bay . Large Bluefish and Stripe Bass are feeding on the bait. The fishing can be frustrating for the fly and light tackle  enthusiast. With all the natural bait the best method seems to be  the snag  and  drop approach. You use a snagging hook and rip it through the bait when a bait fish is caught  you then rig it and drop to the bottom to reach the feeding stripers and bluefish. The Menhaden can be found in the bay and also along the Narragansett shore line.

Out look

We are approaching the fall season and the Stripers and Bluefish will be feeding  most of the day  getting ready to make the move from our area. This is a great time to be on the water refreshing fall air and clear skies. get out and  go fishing, I know I will  look for my report Until Then Tight Lines.

 September 15,2011

Fishing today with Kris Lower and his long time friend Steve Boos from Ohio was nothing but spectacular. As we left the dock  I tried to prepare the  guys for what was about to happen. We would see 4-5 seas and windy conditions, but I was sure we could find fish. False albacore was the target Species. As we  arrived  and I set the boat up in safe location the swell seemed to be lighter than I expected. Oh that would change.  Steve started  off the action as he was soon tight to the first speedster of the morning Steve put 3 Albacore in the boat before Kris knew what hit hm. There would be many more before the morning was over. Steve also landed a RI slam False Albacore and Striped Bass with a Bluefish. Kris had the unfortunate luck to  get cut off several times. Both men landed  many Albies and Bluefish. The seas continued to roll in and Steve was leaning over the side shouting out things that Kris and could not recognize, to be sick is not a pleasant thing. Our day was to end early, both men enjoyed there day together on the water.

I will be out again soon look for my report Until Then Tight Lines

September 14,2011

Fishing along the South County coastline is very good right now. The False Albacore can be found from Narragansett to Watch Hill. The Newport area is also holding many hard tails. The Sakonett River and Brenton Reef  are the prime spots in that area.

Now is the time for the light tackle  enthusiast to score on a fish of a life time. My sports have scored on every outing in spit of sloppy conditions. The fall season is under full swing get out  and fish. I will be out again soon look for my report Until Then Tight Lines. Be sure to check my pictures.

September 13 2011

So its been about a month since I last reported, I will try to fill in the blanks>  First my entire computer system  failed and it was a  challenge to get back on line. We  had some very hot weather toped by some very wet weather. Very windy  late August along with Storms of all types. This brings Hurricane season and New England although spared the storm Irene very high surf made fishing  impossible over the Labor day weekend the  storm cleared and the seas calmed down the Bonito and Albacore entered the scene. Fishing is improving daily and the  bait looks to be in good numbers. This could be a excellent fall . I have caught Albies on all my last trips  and although the bite could be better it is very interesting. I will be out again soon Look for my report. Until Then Tight lines

August 12,2011

Fishing in Rhode Island  has continued to be ever changing from day to day. Narragansett Bay has slowed down to  almost no active fishing. There are Fluke to be caught in the deeper channels but the Bluefish have moved out beyond the bridges to feed on the abundance of bait. The many reefs off Newport and Jamestown are holding Stripers and Bluefish for the early morning bite. Stripers up to 15-20 lbs  feeding on small bait around the edges of the rocks. A good number of Stripers and bluefish have been landed on all trips this week. Still no sign of the Bonito with a few bait balls around it could happen anytime. I will be out again soon Look for my report Until Then Tight Lines

August 3,2011

The Ocean state is fishing great now with bait of all sizes in the mix. The Newport area is holding small bait and the Stripers and Bluefish can be found along the rocky shore. The many  reef's along the coast of Newport and Jamestown is a good place to start the search. Stripers are feeding in the deeper edges of the structure. Now is a time to hit the water. Block Island is loaded with a larger bait Half Beaks. And the fishing is very solid in the areas with bait. The fast moving bait can be found in all water depths. Bonito have entered the scene the fast moving fish are a great  challenge on light tackle or fly. I will be out soon look for my report Until Then Tight Lines

July 24,2011

Sunday July 24

Today I fished with Chris Hampson and his dad Bruce. Chris  fished with me on several occasions. Today it was Block Island last year our outing on the island was cut short as the seas were a bit much for his wife. Chris hooked and landed several nice Stripers today with his best one a feisty fish around 10 lbs his first keeper. After a picture we  released to fight again. We were surrounded by Thunder and lightning most of the morning but were not in the heart of it. The bait fish was running for its life as big Bluefish  chased  all around the boat. From Block Island to Point Judith . Things are heating up  soon we could have Bonito in the area. I will be out again soon look for my report Until Then tight lines

Saturday  July 23

My charter for today will  be rescheduled the extreme heat and  rough sea conditions  were a bit much for the Bryan and his wife .Both would be fly fishing and the conditions were  less than favorable for fly fishing in the open water of Newport. I couldn't pass on the chance to fish .I decided to fish alone and back to the reefs I fished  yesterday. It was a little rough to fish a fly rod alone as the  swell around the rocks was still up. The seas around the structure was  around 3-5 ft.  I was rewarded for my effort a nice 10 lb Striper form the rocks of Jamestown and several nice  school size fish. There  was plenty of Bluefish in the 10 lb class also all fish on the structure.  I will be out again soon look for my report Until then Tight Lines

Friday July 22

As the week progressed I fished the area of Jamestown with Tony Finocchiaro who loves to fish but never tried the light tackle game. Tony and his wife were visiting  Newport for the weekend. I told Tony the fishing could be a challenge with the extreme temps and  windy conditions. Tony handled the difficult conditions very well. we were faced with 3-5 seas and  fishing the many reefs off Newport was a challenge for  me and him as well. Tony did a great job and the fish helped out. tony landed  several Bluefish over 10 lbs and  some quality Stripers from the white water. The best was 34" that refused his offering  and turned away, but Tony went  back into the area with a great cast and soon I boated the  very nice Striper.

July 20 2011

Well its been a week since I last reported. The weather has been the big issue of late .the day time highs are in the triple digits and the humidity make for a challenge to do anything. But I have found the  weather to be more comfortable on the water. If Fluke and Sea bass are your fancy  now is the time to get out and wet a line. I sent the morning morning of July 20 with Serge Farman from Quebec and his brother in law All with there 4 and 9 year  children.  They had a terrific day with 9 Fluke and 6 Sea bass. The 4 year loved to see the fish on the deck . And did his eyes light up when he landed a fish .

July 16,2011

Its mid July and the dog days of summer have arrived ,at least for for the time being. For the fishing it means early start and deep sinking lines to catch the Stripers. The Bluefish are every where from Newport to Narragansett bay. The bait fish is  thick and Blues  can be found feeding on the top. The action can be fast  when you find the schools of feeding fish which come to the surface at time's only for a brief moment. Make a good cast and you  should come tight to a 6-8lb fish.    The Stripers are a different story  to connect on them you need to be on the water early and fishing deep sinking lines this will give you the best chance. The evening tides this week did have some surface feeding  fish close to the  beaches. This weeks full moon made fishing a little difficult for the light tackle  fisherman. I will look for better results this week. Look  for my report Until then Tight Lines

 July 7,2011

Today's trip with Franck Malandain and his son Tyler We headed out of the bay looking for the Stripers that have seemed to  vanish into the depths, along with the  loads of bait. No longer  do I find large schools of bait fish with birds and fish feeding. The bait is scattered along the ocean front, with the fog  we have had lately finding fish has been a challenge. Tyler  gets all the credit for the fish caught today, he spotted two Terns (birds) working  as we were running to a different area.  As I pulled the boat up  in the area we found  pay dirt. Franck and Tyler were into 4-6 lb Bluefish for a solid hour and a half. tight lines and bent rods, the  two Terns working the water changed the out come of the charter. Nice job Tyler. I will be out again soon look for my report Until Then Tight Lines

July 6,2011

As I left the dock with Matt and Dave Patrick of Patrick Motors we  were looking for Stripers in the Newport area. we started to work the structure in the Jamestown area when the fog rolled in. Very heavy fog left us with  no option to fish the many reefs of the  Newport area. At that  point I had to change the game plan, we decided to give the fluke a try. I settled in on the West side of Jamestown and  after a few drifts we  caught a few very nice fluke. After a few more move we finished the day with 5 fluke over 20 inch and the big one  around 26 inches. Matt and Dave  took three for dinner and the we sent the rest back to fight again. We also released  several nice Sea bass there  season will open on Monday July 11. I will be out again soon look for my report Until then Tight Lines

 July 3 2011

So this week the fishing has been very steady the Bluefish are every where and they are feeding. My charter's this week  have been filled with children. All the boys catching fish some for the first time. And some have fished with me many times. The fishing has been great with top water action with feeding Bluefish and Stripers on the surface.. From Newport to Jamestown small silver side's can be found in schools of all sizes look the  birds to lead the way. Narragansett bay  brings Bluefish in good numbers, this mean bent rods for young  fisherman to experience the thrill of a screaming drag. To watch a young child to catch his first first fish is a pleasure for me. I will be out again soon look for my report Until Then Tight Lines

June 28,2011

Another beautiful day and great fishing, the Newport area was socked in with fog but the bite was on. We found Stripers on the surface, although they were  selective we did manage to  land several nice fish. The Bluefish schools were not as prevalent as the past few days. But the restricted visibility  made finding fish a challenge. The conditions are getting better every day, out again soon look for my report Until Then Tight Lines

 June 27,2011

From Narragansett to Newport the action is fast and furious. The striper bite is  an early morning thing right now the deeper water off Newport is loaded with Stripers feeding on silver sides. The bluefish are every where and they are feisty. 6-10 bluefish feeding on small bait is a site to see. The light tackle fisherman and the fly fisherman can score at will. The many reefs  off Newport with the deeper cooler water will still produce Stripers. The white water  on the structure will produce stripers, the fish are holding tight to the rocks. In the open water it is a challenge to get pass the aggressive bluefish. Bent rods and screaming drags, its music to my ears. I will be out again soon look for my report Until then Tight Lines

 June 20 2011

The Newport area is loaded with small bait silver side and sand eels. And the Bluefish have arrived in strong numbers. although the Stripers are holding in deeper water the early morning bite is still consistent. The many reefs of Newport and rocky shore line is still producing daily with bass in the 10-15 lb range and Bluefish up to 8 lbs in good numbers.

I will be out again soon look for my report Until Then Tight liones.

June 10, 2011

Fishing the last week in Rhode Island has moved to the inshore areas of Newport and Point Judith. The Narragansett bay fishing has slowed with push of warmer weather. The stripers if still in the bay are feeding at night or in the deeper water. The Newport area is loaded with bait as is the bay schools of Bluefish in the 4-5 lb range can be caught in the bay while the striper action has moved beyond the bridges. Block Island is  loaded with  sand eels and the fishing is hot right now. The South west side of the Island and the North rip are the best place for the fly and  light tackle  fisherman. I will be working the area beyond the Newport abridges and Point Judith area. Out again soon look fro my report, Until Then Tight Lines

June 1 2011

Tuesday morning with a high tide around 8:15 my plan was to work the structure  around the Islands of Narragansett bay. As I approached the point at the mouth of Warwick cove I noticed some activity in the open water 100 yards away. I  checked  it  out and found loads of surface activity . Small harbor blues have invade the bay, they were chasing small bait to the surface. This is not what I was looking for, as I worked the rocks on my favorite piece of structure. It was a short time and I would be tight to the first of many nice stripers for the day. I soon released a nice 30 inch striper taken from les than 4 ft of water loaded with boulders.  The day was to get better, 15-20 Stripers came to the boat today all taken on the fly in heavy structure. I did hook into one very large Bluefish  that made a quick exit at the boat with my fly as I tried to land it. I found fish on most  of the structure as the tide  flooded into the bay. The small bait was pushed along the rocks by the tide and the steady South West wind. I will be out again soon look for my report Until Then Tight Lines

May 28 2011

The fishing in Rhode Island is in full swing now. from Narragansett Bay to watch Hill including Block Island. The Stripers are feeding on bait if all sizes and the conditions  have finally headed in the right direction. This week with the wind from the South and South West we have seen another push of Stripers entering Narragansett bay. The Fly fishing and light tackle fisherman  can score on a striper of a life time. Stripers from 6-15 lbs  are taking small bait in the bay . Block Island is loaded with sand eels and the fishing is just getting started. It look like it could be a great season.

I will be out all weekend with plenty of open dates don't miss out . Look for my report Until Then Tight Lines

 May 27 2011

Its the start of the holiday weekend and things are in full swing Stripers are feeding on small bait in the bay. My mid week trip wasn't that promising but today was different i found some fresh fish  that entered the bay and they were feeding. The conditions were great with fog to start the day. The light wind from the South West made for ideal conditions  for the fish to enter the bay. The bait looked like small silver sides and the fish were splashing the surface. The action was not fast and furious but  a steady pick of nice size stripers  passed the time quickly. I will be out again soon look for my report Until Then Tight Lines

May 22,2011

Wind    North North /East    Fog /rain

This week has presented  the very uncommon weather for the late May. We should be enjoying 60-75  degree days with light winds. What we have is very wet and cold  windy conditions. As the month draws to the memorial  weekend, the front doesn't seem to want to move on. It looks and feels like March or early April. The forecast for more showers this week but steadily rising temperatures.

May 18 2011

The week went like this on my charters this week I  found the conditions lees than desirable. With a steady rain most of the week and the wind from the North  or North East. It felt more like march .My charter on Wednesday brought a handful of fish to the boat but  no very large fish all the stripers  caught were under the 28 inch mark. Fly fishing was a challenge and the deep sinking lines were the only salvation. There was no surface activity and  little signs of bait fish

May 21 2011

On Saturday  my two sport's on spinning gear managed 5 fish with big one only 26 inch, we had several fish swirl and follow the  offering, but they were not aggressive enough to take the bait. Although it did not rain it was over cast and damp with the heavy morning fog. There are fish in the area but the conditions are not great right now. This week should bring warmer air and more sun. Look  for things to improve I  will be out  this week look for my report Until Then Tight Lines

 Monday May 16

Morning rain and 45 degrees made me adjust my plans to fish today, this front will be in the area for several days . The fishing will be solid when the front moves through. look for my report Until Then Tight Lines

 Sunday May 15 2011

I had an open day but the arrival of the stripers in Narragansett bay I couldn't resist the opportunity to  do some fly fishing. I arrived at the  dock alone before sunrise with a 6:30 am high tide, I would fish the first  two of the incoming and first two of the outgoing. The rain  started as I readied the boat , it really came fast and furious. As I sat waiting for the shower to pass, I just could wait any longer, the fish are wet any way I thought. I headed out in a steady rain and  found birds  in the Barrington area. My first pass with the fly and intermediate line was on the mark  Soon I was tight  but off just as quick.  I caught  several fish around 25 inch nice way to start the day. after 6or 7 fish they were just gone. I continued  to the South by now the rain had stopped and the tide was slack. Birds were on small bait  but no signs of fish. They were there for the taking. I fished into the outgoing tide for two hours and headed back to the ramp. I will be out again soon look for my report.

Until then tight Lines

Saturday May 14

As I launched the boat today I knew today would be different. The fish have arrived ,as I headed  toward East side of the bay there were no magic signs of activity. I started to fish along  the Providence river and headed to the Warren river after the tide started to drop. Finally I found some  fish and put a handful of stripers in the boat. All fish took a 6 inches olive half and  half. I switched  to a smaller fly but  had no take several fish followed to the boat. All the fish caught  today were around 20inches, but there were bigger fish around.

I will be out again tomorrow look for my report Until then Tight lines

Friday May 13 2011

I fished the incoming  afternoon tide today with the hopes of finding fish entering the bay. With full moon on Monday we should see a push of fish. We are in a weather system and things are developing slower than normal. The good news  there appeared to be a substantial amount of activity on my sonar, things are looking up. Any day now,

Weekend  May 7& 8 2011

Launched the Mako for the first outing of the season, The weather has caused a delay in the start of the season. although it has been dry  as compared to the 2010 spring. The unsettled weather has slowed down the arrival of the stripers. The water temp is in the mid 50 to 60 in most area I checked. The place like east Greenwich cove  and Warwick cove are in the high 50 range. Signs of small bait and reports of Squid in Newport harbor can only mean the fish should arrive very soon. The Providence river and the Warren river  have reported some  fish caught on the flood tide and the start of the outgoing tide. Newport second beach is giving up small  stripers in the evening.

My search on Saturday  with bright sunny skies produce no fish with  birds working the water in some areas it did look promising. On Sunday the Providence river was the area I concentrated on with the same results no  Stripers at this time but there were small areas holding  bait. I will be out again soon look for my report Until Then Tight lines

September 14 2010

Tuesday morning fishing charter with Bruce Shepley and his friend Max, we left point Judith dock at 6:20 in the morning it was clear day with no signs of rain forecast, target species for the day was false albacore. Bruce fished with me earlier in the spring but today was Max's first day with On the Rocks Charters. As we moved out of the harbor refuge the tide was full low and no signs of any activity in the area. My intel told me that there was fish to the west of us so I decided to head along the beach toward the four major estuaries dumping small baitfish into the sound. As we headed to the West, I pulled up to birds working the surface and we landed many small stripers and bluefish, after an hour or so of this I decided it was time to move on and look for the Albies. Soon we hit the area where several splashes told me it was hard tails in the area. After a short while I realized that these fish were not catchable and decided to move on further. As a charter boat captain when you leave an area like this your not sure whether you're making the right choice these are the toughest decisions to make. I continued down the beach until I arrived at Watch Hill where we found the mother load, this is what we came for False Albacore. This would be the first time for Bruce and Max to catch the speedsters. Bruce connected quickly on a fly Rod using a two inch brown deceiver. Several fish came to the boat today and Max finally had a chance, he was tied into a feisty albacore. Only the fish broke loose from its hook just at the boat, Max has a little trouble moving around the deck but did a good job handling this feisty fish. Max caught stripers and bluefish also and it was a good day by all. I'll be out again soon and look for my report until then tight lines

September 8-9 2010

Thursday  Sept 9

Brain and I set out around 7:00AM

Wind NW 10-15.

Today the conditions were much better for fishing beyond the bridge’s we headed out the seas were not as big as expected. We worked the reefs in the Newport Jamestown area. Brian caught a handful of Stripers in short order all on the same piece of structure. As the tide change the bait fish was every where. As Brian retrieved the lure through the water you could watch the small bait scatter. We never connected on another fish today with all the bait in the Newport area, the fish are either eating all they want when they want or they are off shore. The report’s from the Tuna grounds the bait is thick and the fishing is great. With Green Bonito and other speeches in the mix. . I will be out again soon Lokk for my report Until Then Tight Lines

Wind WNW 15 with Gust 25

Wednesday Sept 8

Charter today with Brain Dick.

Brain is in town for two days of fishing the wind and cold front moved in and left us with no options to fish beyond the bridges. We searched the bay on Wed and found tons of bait with the Terns working and feeding on the small bait. There  also was small Bluefish  feeding . I do mean small the biggest fish we found was about 12-14 inch. Thursday should be better.

September 2 2010

Charter with Peter Ackerman and his friend Bill, the seas have layed down and the bait is stacked up in the salt ponds. Peter is a fly fisherman and his friend Bill had never caught a fish. Today we would change that. Both Bill and Peter caught several Bluefish in the 4-6 lb range top water plugs and metal lures worked today. Peter hooked up on the fly rod with a sinking line. The bait was every where and the blues were feeding all around us. No signs of the Albies or Bonito but with the amount of bait  it could happen anytime. I will be out again soon look for my report Until Then Tight Lines

Labor Day weekend

Hurricane Earl stayed off shore of the New England coast , but  had a huge affect on the Holiday weekend charter  fishing. All captains were on the docks for the entire weekend. I was able to reschedule my trips to other weekends. So we can wait it out. And see what happens after the seas lay down. I will be out soon look for my report

August 31 2010

My charter today with Bill Walters, started at 530 when I picked him up and headed for the boat ramp arriving around  6 00 by 615 we were  headed for the Newport area.  Bill is an avis fly fisher and couldn't wait to see the Newport area. We stopped at one of the reefs just outside of the bridge and proceeded to work the structure as I notice some surface activity to my right I handed  Bill another fly Rod with intermediate  line and soon it was fish on 18 inch striper. While working one piece of structure Bill came tight to a very nice fish as he held the fish from getting into the rocks the  fish moved out to deeper water and then locked himself between some rocky area. Bill couldn't move the fish but still could feel him there, after short while the fish was gone I can only imagine this was very nice striper. The rest of the morning we had a few more hook up's some bluefish and stripers but with the amount of bait all around us and minimal fish something is going to happen very soon and I hope to be there when it does I'll be out again soon looks my report Until then tight lines.

Saturday August 28

Chad and I left the dock  around 5:30 and headed  right out the reefs off Newport we worked the structure but there was no  action. After a short time the birds were working the water like all Hell would break out soon. It never devolved The fish were not under the bait. Chad  hooked up on a fish  when a small pod broke and I put him position. While he was tight to this fish  the School erupted all around the boat. And as soon As I released the feisty Blue they were gone never to be seen again. The bait was still in balls all around us  no activity. Something  good is going to happen soon in the Newport area. This cant go on forever. I will be out again soon Look for my report Until then Tight lines

 Friday August 27

Evening charter with Chad Goslink we left the dock around 3:00pm for evening fishing off Newport. The wind form the South with the last of the outgoing tide made for a heavy swell at the  mouth of the bay. 3-5 ft  seas . I decided to stay inside through the tide change and it work out. Chad picked up a few Bluefish at the mouth of the bay . Around 5:00pm we decided to run beyond the bridge. The seas did lay down and the fishing picked up. We were on working birds with 5-6 lb Bluefish. The bait was every where, I believed tomorrow would be a good day. Chad and I would be on the water again  in the morning. Look for my report.

Aug 21 Saturday

Fishing along the ocean front of Newport with Charles Lawrence. Chip likes to catch fish and he has had good outings and bad> he knows fishing is like that> Today we worked for the fish we caught. Two pods of fish  surfaced  near the boat and we connected with fish each time. The blues were feeding on Butterfish and Anchovies. They were up and down and gone never to be seen again.  As we tried to stay close to the action, we kept busy  jigging for Sea bass and Fluke and caught several nice fish. The bait fish is scattered along the coast. As the tide dropped out  we found loads of small bait at the mouth of Narragansett bay. Something is going to happen soon, I want to be there when it  happens. I will be out soon look for my report Until Then Tight Lines

Aug 17 Tuesday

Mike Lyons and Charlie Hinnant were my sports today, Mike and Charlie fish in the Connecticut and Massachusetts. Charlie would be working the fly rod with Mike on the spin. This is a good combination you can find the fish and zero in on them. today was a very tough day along Newport The day started out  with Mike and a 7 Lb bluefish but the bites were slow coming. Charlie land a schoolie Striper from heavy cover and Mike landed 5 bluefish and was cut off twice more. We worked for everything today There was no feed birds over bait to lead the way. This has been the trend lately. work and search the structure for signs of life. I will  be out again soon. look for my report Until Then tight Lines

 Aug 15 Sunday

Fished today with Chris Hampson and his wife Martha, they relocated from Vermont. We left the dock early to arrive at Block Island around sunrise, the seas were very active with the SW wind and  outgoing tide. The 4-5 swell got the best of Martha but not before she put 4 Bluefish in the boat. Chris was trying to get his first Saltwater fish on the fly rod of any kind. The seas got the best of Martha and we decided to head in to the main land looking for better conditions. Chris was looking for a Strike. We were running out of time and I pointed the boat away from the ramp and traveled 15 miles along the beach looking for something. finally we found activity. Chris took advantage of the moment. he caught his first Striper and Several Bluefish also first on the Fly rod. All is good. Chris fishes  fresh water with good success but the ocean front is a different game. I will be out again soon look for my report Until Then Tight lInes

August 13 Friday

Today fished Boston harbor with Charlie Gendron and his brother Steve. They are from North of Boston and  to save driving time we meet in Weymouth  to fish Boston area. The reports of excellent fishing  is right on. Shortly after leaving the dock we were into surface feeding fish. the Stripers were all in the 30inch rang and both anglers hooked up often. It was a great day and we will do this again The harbor is a great fishery and the water water quality is excellent. I will be out again soon look for my report. Until Then Tight lines

August 12 Thursday

Charter today from Sakonnet river, Jeff and Laura Grandchamp visiting  family in the area  decide to try fly fishing the Newport area. We left the dock around sunrise to look for Stripers and Bluefish. Today was a very tough day. There was no signs of life on the water. the birds were sitting as if they were waiting for something to happen but it never did. It was just one of those days fishing can be like that. I  will be out again soon look for my report Until Then Tight lines

August 10 Tuesday

Block Island fishing today with Anthony and  Laurie Henry  they are visiting family and booked a trip to fish for Stripers and Fluke. After an early departure  form Point Judith we arrived 3 miles North of the Island and started to work. The fish have been holding in deep water, but today was different the bite was slow but steady enough to keep me there. Anthony picked up several very nice Stripers and a load of Bluefish. Laurie  caught many bluefish also. By 8:30  I relocated to put some fluke in the boat. We did catch our share but they were all Shorty's  just couldn't find the doormats we were seeking. It was a great day and my sports  enjoyed the outing. I will be out again soon look for my report Until Then Tight Lines

 August 8 Sunday

Fished on Sunday with Charles Lawrence a fly fisherman Chip expressed the desire to look for the Bonito in the Newport area. With an early morning flood tide I decide to put in the Westport area as intel had sightings from there to Sakonett river. We started early  with little or no signs of life. Covering  the water between Westport and Narragansett. As the tide became slack I suggested we work the reefs looking for Stripers. Chip found 4 stripers eager to take a fly. we finished the morning looking  in all the usual spots as the tide began to drop. Still no signs of funny fish today.I will be out again soon look for my report. Until Then Tight Lines

Fished Block Island today with three anglers, it was a slow sloppy ride out . When we arrived and dropped the line down it  was game on. We limited out on Stripers and loads of Bluefish. Jamie landed the first fish and he continued to put a serious hurt to 7-10 lb bluefish. The others were down several fish before long. Rich  had the big fish of the day a nice Striper around 12 lbs 34inch. The conditions were a little on the bouncy side but manageable.  Ron did manage his share of angry bluefish all three anglers land Stripers and Bluefish, Today  were  in 70-90 feet of water and  the wind along with the tide sent us looking for  another game. We did find working  birds about 5 miles off point Judith . Another dozen fish came along the side of the boat  these were in the 10-11lb Bluefish. it was a good day  for all. I will be out again  soon look for my report. Until Then Tight Lines

They have fished with me before but not in a year .I have been fishing some raised humps and change on depth in the deeper water off the coast of Block Island. The bite was on today  from the first drop to the very last. both Eric and his son landed Stripers and Bluefish the Big striper fought Eric from the depth of 100 Ft . measuring at 35 inch and in the 18 lb range. Eric's best. Brandon also landed his best Striper today A beauty at 12 lb. The bait was plentiful and the action was non stop, both anglers worked hard. 30 -40 fish were caught today .Its was a great day. I will be out again soon look for my report. Until Then Tight Lines

July 24 2010

Jack Joseph  from North Andover fished with me today and  he is an Accomplished fly fisherman. Jack has not fished in RI in a few years he patrols the waters of Martha's Vineyard. FULL MOON on most morning's like this you can expect the fishing to be a little slow. The tide runs at an increased rate and the fish feed most of the night  with the light of the moon. Today the early morning fog made a big difference. The bite was on and the fish were deep. Today we fished an area where the fish were in deeper water 50-90 ft. Jack has not tried this before with a fly rod but on his first  toss over the side he was on with a nice Bluefish. Jack had the best fish of the day and his personnel best of the year  today a nice 20+ lb Striper taken on a fly in 90Ft of water.  Jack was using a depth charge deep sinking line and  it got the job done . Jack landed  several nice Stripers and a half dozen more Bluefish. 20- 25 fish came to the boat today all on the fly rod in deep water. I will be out again soon Look for my report Until Then Tight Lines

Newport fishing Charter with Chris and Ann Taggert, this was a scheduled Sunrise charter this means we needed to find fish early and  catch them in short order. We left the dock around 5:00am and Chris and Ann were very excited to fish the Newport structure. The bait fish sighting's on the way out to open water  had me thinking this would be a great day. But the full moon with the elevated tide made fishing difficult. Chris work the fly rod while Ann was using spin rods. we covered some prime water today with very little to show for it. Chris is looking to try this again we will be out on Tuesday morning. Look for my report. Until then Tight Lines

Block Island fishing charter, Mark Abbott fished today with On The Rocks Charters. Mark from Bethesda MD on a work seminar and decide to catch an early morning charter before his flight out. We headed to Block Island before 5:00am Mark came tight to a angry Bluefish on his second pass. We never looked back it was non stop action for the next 3 hours. We left Block Island  early enough  for Mark to catch his flight. His total for  the three hours fishing about 25 fish with  a nice mix of Stripers and Blues. All fish were caught in 50 feet of water or more. I will be out again soon Look for my report Until Then tight Lines.

July 18  2010

Heavy wind and aggressive swell made for a difficult weekend of fishing around the Newport area. The shore line  area with the huge white water  held fish but fishing safely was a challenge. The fish caught were holding tight to the structure looking for the tumbling bait fish from the  pounding swell. Boat handling  was the key and constant attention  to the surf  condition was critical. Most of the fish caught were just  in the legal size and were released to fight again.

The report from the Block Island area  the fishing slowed on the south side the bait fish  moved out  into deeper water with the wind steadily from the Southwest we could see another push of bait along the mainland. I will be out again soon look for my report. Until Then tight Lines

July 13 2010

This report will cover the last week on fishing from Newport to Block Island. The week after the forth of July brought many changes . First the weather remained very hot with the temp reaching 100 degrees and in the mid 90 most days. The Newport action continued to be good with a early morning bite . But when the sun was higher in the sky the  surface feed disappeared. My clients caught all the fish before 9:00am and we were back  at the ramp early on most days.Narragansett Bay Is starting to show signs of life again on the weekend  3-4 lb Bluefish were busting up the surface from Prudence Island to the bridges and Block Island has continued to produce fish in the deeper water and the morning bite in some areas is consistent.

July 13 Block Island the South side of the Island had Stripers  in the 20lb range working the surface most of the morning . we had several solid hook ups before the bite died at the tide change. Small bait every where form block to Point Judith but mostly unmolested by  predators. the beach front of point Judith area came alive with stripers working the surface on the outgoing tide. The increase of  bait and a steady South wind could move the fish to the mainland

July 10 weekend. the cold front came in to the area bringing less humid air and the East North East wind direction changed everything The Newport shore line was covered with eel grass and weed the tructure fishing was out of the question. My clients were forced to fish the Narragansett Bay area which to my surprise was loaded with3-4 Bluefish working the surface.  Jason and Bill Tuberville scored on the bluefish and enjoyed some nice action.

July 7 John Barras and his son Tyler along with Dillon MacNayr fished and landed 10 and 11 Lb Bluefish along with a beautiful 32 inch Striper . We rounded out the trip with 5 very nice Sea bass for the grill. every one caught fish but Dillon had the touch this day. He landed the  Striper in the middle of 10 lb Bluefish busting the surface.

July 5 2010

John Spada and his son Paul fished with me today and had a very good 4 hour trip. We left the Portsmouth ramp around 5:00am and soon we found what we were looking for. birds working over small bait and the feed bag was on. Paul hooked up first and often with his first Striper and several nice Bluefish the big one of the day weighing in around 8lbs. His dad John soon joined in the action. Landing many nice Bluefish and I switched rods  for a deeper presentation and it sure did the trick John  landed a beautiful 10 lb 31" striper. Several more were taken using the same method. We fished under the Bluefish to score on the Stripers. I will be out again soon look for my report Until Then Tight Lines

 July 3 2010

There have been several charter's since my last report all have been in the Newport area. The fishing has been fantastic for the fly and light tackle  clients. The flocks of birds working over the small bait and busting fish makes it easy to find the action.  Then the fun begins these  fish have been selective at times and finding the right fly or imitation can be a problem. The past week with the cooler weather the fish  have been more aggressive. Yesterday's charter produced a mix of Stripers and 4-6 lb Bluefish. The top water action was non stop. My clients were into the action for three solid hours  while fish splashing everywhere.

Report's from other Captains from the Point Judith and Block Island area the fishing is solid also. The sand eels are in abundance and the  surface feed is an early morning or evening  situation . The fish can be taken in the deeper water  when the surface activity falls off. The water temp and amount of bait looks like we could see some fast moving hard tails a little early this year. I will be out again soon and will post a report Until then Tight Lines

June 21 2010

It has been a while since my last report. The fishing has been a challenge. Things are so different from years past. Last year at this time On The Rocks was fishing in Narragansett Bay and catching loads of Stripers on Structure. The top water action was like never before. The fly fishing was mostly in the shallow areas with floating line and poppers scoring regularly. The spin guys would take large bass use needle fish and other surface plugs.  During the month of March  the rains came and they kept on coming the flooding was severe through out the state. I believe we paid the price then and we are still witnessing the  impact of  the heavy rain. I believe the amount of fresh water in the river system has change the cycle of the life in the bay. I have never witnessed such large amounts of small bait in RI sound this early in the season. I believe the low salt content and extremely warm spring has altered mother nature.

2010 the month of May started off nicely with big Menhaden in the bay and the Stripers were actively feeding. Find the bait and you would find the fish. As the month came to a close, the fishing would get tougher. The Stripers went deep looking for food and the fishing got very slow for the light tackle fisherman. The bay now is not fishing well at all there are people still fishing deep and catching a few big fish the night time bite is a little better.

Beyond the Bridges Newport point Judith

I have moved my operation to the Newport and Point Judith area.

Block Island is in full swing now with Bass and Blues feeding on the abundance of Sand eels in the area. The Newport area  holds fish as well with early morning activity on the many reefs just off the beach front. Breton reef is a good bet for the early bite. Hungry Stripers on the surface willing to take the right fly. Most of the fish are the same size from 27’-32 inch with an occasional bigger fish in the mix. They have been very selective at times.

Block Island is a good choice for the chance of a larger fish the bait fish can be found most places in the open water watch for the bird activity to give the sign of things to come. With the abundance of bait in open water the Structure fishing is still a bit slow but that can change anytime.

With all the bait in the area from Newport to Block Island I think we could be in for a great summer. The bluefish will start to appear sooner or later and then we could see a good hard tail season. Bonito and false Albacore hopefully will appear as the month of July progresses.

If you are looking for table fare the Fluke fishing is in full swing with quality fish taken on every trip. The 19.5” size limit makes for nice fillets and a few doormats mixed in make for a enjoyable day. With a tasty meal for the family.

So I will work on posting more reports, but that is how it has worked out so far. I will be out again soon look for my report. Until then tight lines.

This is the first report of the season

 May 7 2010

Sailed today with Greg Rexford, Greg has fished with me before and I will say he has had no luck we call it the curse. Today would be different Greg landed his first keeper Striper which he sent back to the fishing Gods. Because of this I believe he was rewarded with another nice fish, not really there were some nice fish around today. Greg landed and released another 31 inch Striper which fought  gallantly bending the rod almost to the limits. The wind increased  after the tide change and we were back on the trailer early. Six very nice stripers were caught and released today and the bait fish seemed to be in the shallow water on the out going tide. Soft plastics bait caught all the fish today.1/4oz jig with a 7.5 Slug go. All fish were fresh and the season look s to be off to a good start. I will be out again soon look for my report, Until Then Tight Lines

May 1 2010

Launched the boat this morning to work out the systems and check all operations. After a short run I decided to check on a shallow water flat that always hold fish in the early season. The tide was coming in and the water temp was still just below 50 a little cool but worth the try. After as short time I hooked into the first decent fish of the season. I had caught quite a few fish in the river but most were much smaller. The fish measured 26 inch and covered with fresh lice, things were about to get started only a couple fish were caught today. I will be out soon look for my report Until Then Tight Lines
